FAQ for employees - general questions

1. Is there a minimum I must give? Is there a maximum?
If you choose to contribute through on-going payroll deduction, there is a minimum contribution of $1 per pay period which is $26 per year. There is no minimum if you contribute through a one-time payroll deduction, however, a minimum of $25 makes employees voting members of SEGN. | top

3. How do I sign up?

4. How much of my money goes to the non-profit organization?
100% of your charitable gift!  The company covers all administrative costs associated with SEGN.  That means 100 % of your money goes to the charity of your choice. | top

5. Can I give to more than one organization?
Yes! You can give to one or more non-profit organizations.  You might select the SEGN fund that serves the county where you live and several other favorite charities, for example.  The form has room to specify your charities of choice and online you can allocate your gift to one or more charities.  | top
 
6. Who are the employees who decides how SEGN chapter funds are allocated?
Advisors are volunteers elected by SEGN members for two-year terms.  Click here for the full list of Local Advisory Council members by chapter. | top

7. Can I add my organization if it’s not on the current list? 
Yes!  You can add your own organization as long as it’s eligible.  Eligible organizations are those that have received tax-exempt status by the IRS.  In order to add a new organization, you will need the following information: legal name, Federal Tax ID number, contact person, email address, address, and phone number. | top

8. Can I designate a specific program or fund at my charity?
Yes.  SEGN allows designating a fundraiser event, program or fund within a charity.  | top

9. Will my payroll deduction donations be matched?
Yes, the Sempra Energy Foundation offers a match for contributions to educational, arts or cultural organizations and you must complete a Matching Gifts Program form each quarter to have your contributions for that quarter matched. Please contact the Sempra Energy Foundation at 1-877-SEMPRA9 for more information on the Matching Gifts program. | top

10. Are contributions I make to non-profit organizations through SEGN tax deductible?
Yes, your donations to charities are tax deductible.  | top

11. Can I make a one-time donation without affecting my on-going payroll deductions?
Yes.  You can specify a deduction for one pay period, or on-going.  When you want to make a special donation, you might select a one-time donation.  Your choices are “as an ongoing payroll deduction” or “for one pay period only.”  However, keep in mind SEGN funds are distributed quarterly. | top

12. Can my donation be anonymous?
Yes.  You will still have the advantage of receiving tax deductions, but the charity will not know your identity.

13. Will the charity know the amount of my gift?
Reports go to each organization listing each employee and the amount given that quarter by that employee.  This allows charities to individually thank donors for their gifts.  This information is shared only with the charities.  However, when “anonymous” is selected, it simply says “Anonymous and the amount.” | top

14. Will SEGN accept checks?
Unfortunately, SEGN cannot accept check contributions. PLEASE NOTE:The Sempra Employee Giving Network payroll deduction system is currently inaccessible. 15. Is the Sempra Employee Giving Network the same organization as Energy for Others? Do the pledges carry over?
Yes, in 2008, Energy for Others legally changed its name to the Sempra Employee Giving Network. Please note that this name change does not affect pledges. | top

16. Who is eligible to participate in the Sempra Employee Giving Network?
All U.S. based employees within the Sempra Energy Family of Companies may participate in this program. This includes Sempra employees who are on employment contracts or interns. Please note, ACT1 contracted employees, or employees working for another contracted vendor, are unable to participate in SEGN. | top
